Is Iran a Friend of Russia in Foreign Trade?

1/9/2023

Recently, special attention has been paid again to the North–South transport corridor. Russia is expanding shipping channels on the Volga, and Iran is expanding to the port of Chabahar. The countries are sending cargo via a new shipping route through the Azov and Caspian Seas.

This situation has been highlighted by the RBC news release.

MTK "North–South" is of great importance for both countries. For Russia, it is a gateway to eastern countries, as well as access to the seaports of Iran, connection with the markets of Pakistan and India and other Southeastern countries that are developing economically rapidly. Interaction with them will help Russia find further support for its economy after reducing business relations with Europe. For Iran, this corridor also means economic growth.

The issues of decoupling the logistics nodes of the transport corridor are acute, decisions were made at the level of the president.

"Progress is underway, there are many projects, but there are still few actions to expand railway routes and establish ferry services. At the moment, the overland route and delivery by road are working. Containers are transported to the ports of the Caspian Sea, then they are loaded onto vehicles and continue the route to the ports of the Persian Gulf with access to India," comments Miroslav Zolotarev, CEO of ACEX Group.
